The Detroit Lions have pulled themselves out of the depths they were in the past two decades and are now starting to field competitive teams on a year-to-year basis. A lot of that has to do with how well the defense has come together and that defense is led by Pro Bowler Ndamukong Suh.

But Suh is nearing the end of his rookie contract and that means the negotiations with the Lions need to start going somewhere if the team doesn’t want to lose him this offseason to another team. He’s a top defensive talent, and no matter how much teams pretend they’re disgusted by his antics, all 32 of them will throw gobs of money at him to get Suh on their defensive front.

According to Jason La Canfora from CBS Sports, there is a growing sense around the league that the Detroit Lions will not get a deal done with Suh and he’ll hit free agency this offseason.

"Sources said the Lions remain optimistic about him staying and are very enthused about his start to the season. But there is a growing sense in conversations with numerous execs and agents around the league, including many who have been in contact with Suh’s representatives, that striking a deal prior to the start of free agency will be very difficult."

Of course, there is still plenty of time for the Lions and Suh to work something out, but so far nothing has come of their contract talks. If they lose Suh — which is possible if he hits free agency — it could be a blow that sets the Lions defense back just enough to make the even more frustrating to watch than they already are.
