The New York Yankees’s playoff chances are pretty slim as it is, but now the Yankees might have to make the final push without first baseman Mark Teixeira, who exited Saturday night’s loss to the Toronto Blue Jays with soreness in his right wrist, an injury that has plagued Teixeira for much of this season.

Teixeira started the game and struck out twice in two at bats, but was removed when Yankees manager Joe Girardi saw the first baseman wince, and decided to send Brendan Ryan in to pinch-hit for Teixeria in the fifth, and then Ryan took over at first for the sixth. Teixeira’s surgically repaired right wrist has been an issue for him almost all season, but has really flared up recently. It’s possible the Yankees could shift catcher Brian McCann to first for the final week if Teixeria is indeed shut down for the season.

The Yankees also announced outfielder/designated hitter Carlos Beltran, who also has been plagued by a nagging injury, is contemplating surgery for a bone spur in his right elbow. Beltran has been dealing with the bone spur since May, and Yankee team doctors have warned Beltran he should not receive another cortisone shot this season.

Beltran and Teixeira are two of a list of injured Yankees in 2014. Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is uncertain of his status next week, and the Yanks already shut mid-season acquisition Martin Prado down earlier this week. In addition, though Masahiro Tanaka will make his first start since July today, it’s still possible he could need Tommy John surgery with another flare-up of his UCL injury.
