Carlos Beltran’s first season in the Bronx with the New York Yankees has been a disappointment, and after a late scratch from Wednesday’s game, it could be over completely. A bone spur in Beltran’s right elbow has been bothering the designated hitter and outfielder almost the entire season, and now news comes that Beltran might need surgery before the offseason starts.

Beltran will sit the next two-to-three games to see if the pain in his elbow subsides before deciding on surgery, but Beltran himself admitted it’s a possibility.

“It’s very frustrating, but it is what it is. There’s nothing I can do about it,” Beltran said last night. “If I can’t go out and take a swing like I normally take in a game, I might need to have the surgery.”

The Yankees have known surgery could be an option for Beltran’s elbow since May, but have been giving him cortisone shots and rest to manage the pain and keep him on the field. Beltran has had three such shots this year, and the Yankees team doctor doesn’t recommend a fourth this season.

Beltran’s season has been one to forget. The 37-year old signed a three-year, $45 million dollar deal in the offseason with New York after spending the past two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. Beltran has 15 home runs, but is slashing .236/.305/.409 in 394 at bats and has been worth a dismal -1.6 bWAR.
