Chad Mendes suffered his first and only (thusfar) professional loss of his MMA career in his first fight with Jose Aldo, with the featherweight champion defeating the Team Alpha Male member via KO in the first round. Since the loss, Mendes has racked up five impressive straight victories — four of which coming by way of TKO.
The accomplished featherweight contender has improved his stand-up game since the first contest against Aldo in 2012, but ‘Money’ believes ‘Scarface’ hasn’t made any major improvements since their first encounter.
“I don’t think he’s changed a lot,” Mendes said. “I’ve watched his past few fights, and he’s just really good at what he does, and he just uses it in every single fight. I haven’t seen any major improvements. He seems to be a guy that’s in his comfort zone, because it’s been working. But I think it takes a guy like me with my style to get in there and push a guy like Jose out of his comfort zone, to really test his skill level. Those type of fights always make it entertaining for the fans. I’m going to go out there and test his will, and I’m going to put a hurting on him.
Since their first fight, Aldo has defeated Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas, taking his total UFC title defences to six. ‘Scarface’ will meet Chad Mendes in the main event of UFC 179, after their initial match-up was scheduled for UFC 176 — the event will take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on October 25.
