The Atlanta Falcons scored 35 points before the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could blink last week, and if Matt Ryan gets his way next week, they’ll start fast on offense once more. A hot start is one of the keys for the team moving forward, according to Ryan, who spoke on his morning radio show in Atlanta.

“I think we’ve got to start off fast,” Ryan said on Atlanta’s 680 the Fan, via ESPN. “I think last time we were on the road, we did not start off fast. And the other thing is, we’ve got to convert third downs. The two games that we’ve played well, we’ve converted third downs at a high level. So, we need to start fast and convert on third down.”

“You’ve got to put yourself in good position,” Ryan added, “in third-and-short — especially on the road. And you’ve also got to get first downs on first and second down. That’s the key to playing good offensive football.”

The Falcons currently sport the top offense in the league after their Thursday night explosion. The numbers might be skewed for now, but there’s no denying the team relies on a big play offense with high capabilities. Big plays require first downs, which is why Ryan is so focused on not just converting third downs, but on avoiding them altogether.
