The Toronto Blue Jays will miss the playoffs in 2014. Considering their charge to the top of the American League East during the first half of the season, that has to be considered a disappointing outcome. Additionally, their division looked to be quite winnable at the time, though the Baltimore Orioles might have taken over eventually no matter what.

Even still, the Blue Jays have taken a hard fall and they will have to take a discerning look at things moving forward. Would the disappointment from this season cost manager John Farrell his job? Perhaps some people think it should, but Jon Heyman of CBS reports that the Blue Jays plan to bring Gibbons back next season:

"Team higher-ups are said to be planning for next season without even a thought they might consider changing managers, and it is said that unless something crazy and unforeseen happens, Gibbons will ba back with two more years in hand. Gibbons’ contract is purposely set up whereby a year is added every Jan. 1 so that he’s never a lame duck, so he’ll be under contract through 2016."

The main culprit for Toronto’s disappointing finish was injuries to key players. There will certainly be changes to be made, but it wouldn’t have made sense to make Gibbons fall on the sword when there were so many factors out of his control.
