If you’re a fan of the San Francisco Giants, know this: the Milwaukee Brewers are going to be cheering against your team, hard, for the next five days. It’s nothing personal, but after losing to the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night, the Brewers made it such that they must win out and the Giants must lose out to force a one game playoff.

Strange things happen in baseball this time of year, but that is probably too much to hope for.

Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Pirates officially punched their ticket to the playoffs last night; now they will turn their attention to the surprisingly winnable National League Central, leaving open the unexpected possibility that it could be the St. Louis Cardinals playing in that one-game Wild Card round. The Giants were hoping to put similar pressure on the Los Angeles Dodgers out west, but a loss on Tuesday night likely sealed their fate as a Wild Card team.

Here are the National League Wild Card standings with five days left in the regular season:

  1. Pittsburgh Pirates – 86-71, — WCGB
  2. San Francisco Giants – 85-72, — WCGB
  3. Milwaukee Brewers – 80-77, 5.0WCGB

The Brewers were already long shots after losing a series to the Pirates this past weekend. With Tuesday’s loss, it looks like their second-half collapse is complete. It will be a long off-season in Milwaukee.
