New York Yankees’ Carlos Beltran won’t play again in 2014
By Ed Carroll
New York Yankees manager Joe Giradi has said designated hitter and outfielder Carlos Beltran will undergo surgery to remove bone spurs from his right elbow and won’t play again in 2014, though the Yankees expect him to be ready for spring training next March.
Beltran has had a rough season due to his elbow, which has been bothering Beltran since May, and has already had three cortisone shots to deal with the pain, but as the Yankees were officially eliminated from postseason contention, it made little sense to have the 38-year old continue to play out the season, especially since he’s under contract for two more seasons.

Beltran signed with the Yankees after two seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, and hit 15 home runs but slashed .233/.301/.402 in 449 plate appearances over 109 games.
The Yankees will be counting on healthy 2015 seasons from Beltran, Ellsbury, Teixeira, and starting pitchers Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia. Beltran was worth -0.5 fWAR to the Yankees in 2014, by far his lowest production of his 17-year MLB career, which he has spent with the Kansas City Royals, the New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants, in addition to the Yankees and Cardinals.
