Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the three tournaments he was due to play at the close of the 2014 season. It was a decision he had made before the start of the Malaysian Open, citing burn-out as his reason for cutting his season short.

Kyrgios, the eighth seed in Kuala Lumpur, was upset came in an all Australian clash between Marinko Matosevic. Matosevic eventually upset fellow Australian Kyrgios in consecutive tie-breaks, winning 7-6(4) 7-6(3). Kyrgios had all the momentum in the second set, but failed to capitalise, which perhaps evidences his mental fatigue.
His schedule was due to take him to Beijing 500 next week, followed by Masters 1000 events in Shanghai and Paris and it is not a decision he will have taken lightly. It is important young tennis stars don’t push themselves too hard when they sniff the chance of a breakthrough; otherwise they risk the longevity of their career.
