Sun Life Stadium built on Indian Burial Ground
By Mike Marteny
You have all seen Poltergeist, right? Apparently the Dolphins did not heed the warning set forth in the 1982 supernatural thriller in which a house built on an Indian burial ground becomes haunted.

When the Dolphins broke ground on Joe Robbie Stadium, now Sun Life Stadium, in 1985, they found several ancient artifacts that archaeologists attributed to an Indian tribe called the Tequesta that inhabited the land around Biscayne Bay until the arrival of the Spanish in the 17th century. Of course, they weren’t going to let something so petty interrupt a football stadium!
The Dolphin brass brought in archaeologists, who sifted the dirt and took care to salvage all of the old artifacts. They also took care of the remains that were found, but the damage was done. As the Miami New Times suggests, the Dolphins may be cursed.
Hey, don’t laugh. Curses are very real in sports. Just ask the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs, and their fans who lived in anguish for generations. Football needs a cursed team too! After all, this is the age of equality for everyone!
Case in point: the Dolphins went to the Super Bowl in 1985 after Dan Marino’s historic 1984 season. They lost to the San Francisco 49ers behind Joe Montana that year, but the point is, they went. They haven’t come close to being back since. They broke ground on Joe Robbie/Sun Life Stadium just a couple of months later. Coincidence?
That appearance against the 49ers in Super Bowl XIX was the Dolphin’s fifth in 19 years. They have zero appearances in the last 29 years. In fact, that haven’t even been as far as the conference championship since 1992!
The Dolphins have not made the playoffs since 2008, and always seem to be rebuilding. Even Hall of Famer Dan Marino couldn’t get them back to another Super Bowl, and he played for nearly a decade in Joe Robbie/Sun Life Stadium. That alone is evidence of a curse.
So just how are the Dolphins supposed to go about breaking this curse? Exorcism may be the only option. Conventional front office moves just aren’t getting it done.
