Capital One Cup: Roundup, 9/24

More from Soccer

The Capital One Cup Fourth Round continued on Wednesday with a selection of games that were full of drama. With a place in the last 16 at stake, teams were desperate to progress in a cup competition that has often been questioned.

Burton 0 – 3 Brighton

Brighton, under the leadership of ex-Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia, made serene progress into the last 16 of the Capital One Cup. The Championship side, who narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League last season, produced a clinical display to dispatch Burton, who were out of there depth in Round 4.

Chelsea 2 – 1 Bolton

Chelsea made hard work of beating Bolton, requiring 28 shots in total to score their two goals. Centre-back Kurt Zouma scored on his Chelsea debut, before Matt Mills headed past Cech to make it interesting.  Chelsea finally made the pressure tell in the 55th minute, Oscar drilling home from range.

Man City 7 – 0 Sheffield Wednesday

Man City produced a performance that belied the arguments that they weren’t taking the Capital One Cup seriously. New York City loanee Frank Lampard continued his goal scoring form,  grabbing two goals. Edin Dzeko also scored two and the evening was made perfect when Spanish teenager Pozo scored on his debut. Poor Sheffield Wednesday.

Tottenham 3 – 1 Nottingham Forest

Totenham went behind in the 61st minute and it looked like their stuttering form would continue. However, a pearler from Ryan Mason put them on level terms before an equally impressive effort by Roberto Soldado put them ahead.

Crystal Palace 2 – 3 Newcastle (after extra time)

Newcastle and under-fire boss Alan Pardew earned a huge win in the context of their season, away to a Crystal Palace side who had been in good form. After Pardew had moved to take the pressure of new striker Emmanuel Rivière at the weekend, the French striker netted twice to take the game to extra time. Paul Dummett grabbed the winner with a diving header late into the second half of extra time.

West Brom 3 – 2 Hull

The most dramatic end to a Capital One Cup game this week, with West Brom coming from nowhere to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the space of two minutes. It looked like the baggies were heading home, before goals from Gareth McAuley and Saido Berahino turned the game on its head.
