Head coaches Doug Marrone and Bill O’Brien go way back, which is why each was willing to talk about the other in the interviews leading up to the Week 4 contest between their respective teams, the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Texans. They might have some tough words for each other, but what are friends for after all?

“He’s a liar, I never liked that guy,” Marrone said per ESPN.

So began the jabs exchanged between former co-workers whose relationship dates back to the mid-1990’s. The two actually introduced each other to their wives at separate junctures in life, which keeps them in touch even as the rigorous schedule of an NFL head coach consumes their free time.

“I probably didn’t think Colleen would ever like him,” Marrone quipped. “I couldn’t believe she liked him.”

O’Brien had some tongue-in-cheek jabs for Marrone though. “His wife is a lot cooler than him.”

The two met at Georgia Tech, where each was a position coach — O’Brien coached the running backs while Marrone handled the offensive line. Their careers split after that, but the two always stayed in touch even as life brought them more and more apart. Now they’ll be staring each other down from opposite sidelines in Houston. Let’s hope the jokes don’t get too foul once the penalty flags start flying.
