Both Billy Butler and Alcides Escobar — two big pieces of this Royals team — weren’t even born the last time the team they play for clinched a playoff berth. Jarrod Dyson and Alex Gordon were both one-year old infants when the Royals last made the playoffs but both played critical roles in getting the team to the postseason this year.
With their ticket to October punched, the Royals will prepare to play the Oakland A’s in the Wild Card round of the playoffs, assuming Oakland doesn’t collapse these last few games. The likelihood that the A’s implode is improbable, but it’s something that the Seattle Mariners are praying for.
But in Kansas City, the prayers have been answered — for now. The last time the Royals were in the postseason, Back to the Future was still a brand new movie and the team has seemingly found its DeLorean and traveled back to 1985 with its success this year.
