The Milwaukee Brewers feel they have four capable starting outfielders in Ryan Braun, Geraldo Parra, Khris Davis and Carlos Gomez, and have apparently discussed the possibility of moving Braun to first base next season to satisfy the glut. No decision has been made, but it’s unlikely Milwaukee keeps journeymen first basemen Lyle Overbay or Mark Reynolds next year.

First base has been a question mark for the Brew Crew since Prince Fielder bolted for the Detroit Tigers (and millions of dollars), and despite a performance-enhancing drug-related suspension at the beginning of the year, Braun had a decent year with the bat, hitting 19 home runs with 81 RBI and the right-hander slashed .269/.323/.457.

Those numbers aren’t equal to his MVP-caliber seasons in 2011 and 2012, but considering how poor Brewers first basemen have played since Fielder’s departure, Braun’s production at first would be a welcome oasis for Milwaukee fans. But it does not appear any decision is imminent for Braun’s position.

“I haven’t talked enough with (GM) Doug (Melvin) about it to even know if there would a reason to do it,” Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. “I think he’s a good defender in the outfield, learning a new position that he picked up pretty fast. I think he’ll continue to get better in right.”

Roenicke is looking at Braun’s error total, which isn’t bad with only two on the year. But Defensive Runs Saved tells a different story with Braun, as he’s cost the Brewers in the field (-7 DRS). Roenicke also mentions the team hasn’t approached Braun about it yet, but feel the acquisition of Parra at the trade deadline might necessitate a move for someone to first base.
