The Tennessee Volunteeers landed a commitment from a second top-six defensive tackle as Shy Tuttle (Lexington, NC, North Davidson) gave his verbal commitment to head coach Butch Jones and the Vols from his high school following a pep rally.

Tuttle is ranked as the nation’s No. 42 recruit overall regardless of position, No. 6 defensive tackle and the No. 1 recruit in the state of North Carolina, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The 6-3, 315-pound Tuttle picked the Vols over the North Carolina Tar Heels and NC State Wolfpack, among others.

A frequent visitor to Knoxville this spring and summer, Tuttle visited Tennessee March 29, June 7 and for the Tennessee season opener against the Utah State Aggies on August 31.

Tuttle is now the 23rd commitment for the 2015 class for Jones and the Volunteers who have been on a tear on the recruiting trail since arriving in Knoxville prior to the start of last season.

The addition of Tuttle to the class that is headlined by five-star defensive tackle Khalil McKenzie (Concord, CA. Clayton Valley) will be the best pair of defensive tackles on Rocky Top since John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth were making life miserable for opposing offensive linemen and stuffing the opponents run game more nearly 15 years ago.

With the commitment of Tuttle, Tennessee now owns the nation’s No. 7 class and the No. 5 class in the SEC, according to the 247Sports team rankings.
