Ryder Cup: Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker halve with Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter, Europeans hold lead
Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker have played extremely well in the 2014 Ryder Cup as a pairing, but they have not gotten a win yet. In three matches so far, Fowler and Walker have halved each match. They did again in 18 holes against Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter Saturday morning. They’ll be the only American players to play in all four matches when the afternoon session rolls around.

Likewise, Team Europe’s Rory McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the world, has yet to get a win in the 2014 Ryder Cup. He has halved with Fowler and Walker for the second time in a row. He’s now 0-1-2 in this Ryder Cup and he’ll play with Sergio Garcia as he did yesterday in Saturday afternoon’s match.
Fowler, Walker and McIlroy, Poulter halved after a back and forth match. Poulter birdied and won hole one and then Walker got it back for the U.S. on hole five. McIlroy won holes eight and nine for Team Europe with two birdies giving them a 2-up advantage.
The Americans then won holes 10, 11 and 13 without a European score, giving themselves a 1-up advantage. Poulter was able to chip in for birdie on the 15th to match Fowler’s birdie to avoid going 2-down. After a bad effort from Fowler and Walker on 16 as Fowler chunked his third shot, a chip up to the green and Walker found himself in bunker trouble, the Europeans won the 16th and brought it to all-square and the match was halved from there.
Ian Poulter was the hero for the Europeans in 2012 at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, and he was the hero Saturday morning preventing the Americans from tying the score as he saved birdie on 15 and won 16. With the halve, Europe still holds a one-point lead going into the afternoon session 6.5-5.5.
Fowler and Walker will play again in the afternoon session where they’ll take on Victor Dubuisson and Graeme McDowell and try to get this first win of the cup.
