Matt Kuchar and Jim Furyk looked like they had a chance to come back and have a chance to halve or even win their alternate shot match against Europeans Lee Westwood and Jaimie Donaldson, but it was Team Europe getting the point with the 1-up victory.

Kuchar and Furyk were able to win the third hole with a par, but then it was Westwood and Donaldson who went 2-up after winning the sixth, seventh and 11th hole. Kuchar and Furyk birdied the 16th hole and had a chance to win the 17th with a birdie putt, but Kuchar wasn’t able to drop it.

On the 18th hole, Kuchar’s approach to the green was hit fat and didn’t make it, giving the Europeans an easy path to victory.

Westwood, 41, is in his ninth Ryder Cup appearance, the veteran for Team Europe and with the match win, he has extended his all-time Ryder Cup record to 19-13-6. This is Donaldson’s first Ryder Cup appearance.

This is Kuchar’s third Ryder Cup appearance and his record is now 3-3-2. This is Jim Furyk’s ninth Ryder Cup appearance and he has struggled to a 9-18-4 all-time record.

This was the first match of the Friday afternoon session to conclude. With the win, the Europeans gain a point on the Americans to tie it up at 2.5 points each with three matches still on the course.

With temperatures plummeting and winds picking up in Scotland, it’ll make for an interesting finish for the rest of the afternoon matches.
