Washington came into this game with a lot to prove, hoping to extend their record this season to 5-0 while notching a key conference victory. They kept the game close enough to have a chance, but ultimately could not make enough impact plays to get the win.
Predictably, the Huskies’ offense had trouble moving the ball against a stingy Stanford defense. Washington did convert a touchdown on a pass to Jaydon Mickens in the second quarter. Their only other first half points came on a fumble recovery that was returned 32 yards for a score.
Otherwise there was nothing doing, with Cyler Miles held to just 74 yards passing through the first three quarters of this game.
Stanford, the 16th ranked team in the country entering this game, dealt with the same issues they have all year en route to a tight victory. They played outstanding defense but struggled to score enough points on offense. As time wound down in the fourth quarter, however, they will able to come up with the 47-yard touchdown drive they needed, capped off by a touchdown run from quarterback Kevin Hogan.
The burden fell on Hogan in this game, as he led the Cardinal in passing yards and rushing yards. Stanford came out with the win, and while their defense will make them a dangerous team all season, they still need to get things clicking on the offensive side of the ball moving forward.
