Detroit Tigers outfielder Rajai Davis left last night’s loss to the Minnesota Twins after suffering a pubic strain while running out a play in his first at bat last night.

Davis will be re-evaluated today.

A pubic strain is similar to a groin strain, and it could be bad news for the Tigers and Davis whose speed has been a weapon for Detroit this season.

Davis took an awkward break towards first while grounding out in the second inning and was replaced by Ezequiel Carrera in centerfield to start the third. Davis, who has taken over center since the Tigers traded Austin Jackson to the Seattle Mariners in a three-team deal which netted Detroit left-hander David Price, is a player who relies on his mobility and speed.

The iniaial diagnosis was a Grade 1 sprain.

Davis has 36 stolen bases and has been worth 1.4 fWAR this season; his first with Detroit.

If Davis ends up missing time, the Tigers will likely turn to a combination of Carrera and Don Kelly to fill the void in both the lineup and the field, but it’s a less-than-idea situation for manager Brad Ausmus.

Carerra, who was originally turned to in center at the beginning of August, fell out of favor with poor play and has started just one game in September. Kelly has started three games in center this month.

Detroit has a one-game lead in the AL Central over the Kansas City Royals, but have clinched at least a Wild Card berth.

A Tigers win today clinches the Central.
