Jason Giambi nearly hung up his cleats and pursued a career as a manager. He even got a second interview for the managing gig with the Colorado Rockies. That was two years ago.

After he was not chosen for that job, he decided to give playing another crack. Two seasons with the Cleveland Indians later, and Giambi will once again be left to decide what the future holds.

At 44 years old, Giambi seems to have a pretty firm understanding of where he stands and the fact that this might be the end of the line. As passed along by Zack Meisel of the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

"“Maybe someone’s looking for a broken-down 44-year-old to come take a few extra hacks,” Giambi said. “We’ll see.”Giambi played in only 26 games this year, as he spent the majority of his time on the disabled list, often for convenience sake so the club could manipulate the active roster."

Giambi is a career .277 hitter with 440 career home runs. His career was complicated by his admitted steroid use while he played for the New York Yankees, but he has transformed into something of an elder statesman in the twilight of his career. That has made it more enjoyable for the fan bases where he has landed, both with the Colorado Rockies and then with the Indians.

Even in his age 42 and 43 seasons, Giambi was still capable of a dramatic moment every now and then.

Given Giambi’s durability issues this season, he will presumably take a hard look at retirement. Then again, we have presumed that would be the case in the past, and he just keeps coming back. Some team would have to give him a chance, of course, and that is no guarantee at this point.
