Bobby Orr. Troy Brown. Paul Pierce. Three iconic Boston sports heroes from three different sports. These men were at Fenway Park today in Boston to pay tribute to retiring Yankees legend Derek Jeter.

More from Boston Red Sox

On top of this, the entire 2014 Boston Red Sox roster took the field to congratulate “The Captain” one final time before today’s contest. There was even a Jason Varitek sighting.

And though today’s game between the two storied rivals means very little with regards to the final standings, almost all those in attendance understand the significance of this moment.

A respected villain in Red Sox, and Boston history, Jeter was also presented an honorary base from the organization, complete with pinstripes and a number 2 painted on. There was a donation to his “Turn 2 Foundation.”

If this was not enough, a video was shown that featured Derek Jeter taking the Ice Bucket Challenge in honor of ALS research. The inventor of the challenge, Peter Frates was even on hand to greet him on field.

To top it all off, the Red Sox organization presented Jeter with a sign commemorating a hashtag we have all become accustomed to late in this baseball season; re2pect. A rendition of the Aretha Franklin classic was a classy touch to the festivities.

Understandably so, the Yankee caption was all smiles throughout. But hey, enough fanfare. We have some baseball to play. And I am sure Jeter is dying to play one last game.
