Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin refused to publicly name struggling quarterback Ryan Tannehill as the team’s starter, instead choosing to privately tell Tannehill he would get the start this weekend against the Oakland Raiders. According to the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero, the damaged caused by Philbin’s games is done and Tannehill’s respect for his coach is dwindling.

Philbin refused to publicly commit to Tannehill during practice this week despite the quarterback getting reps with the first team, and Tannehill accused his coach on Wednesday of creating a distraction with his silence and leaving it to the players to deal with the consequences. On Thursday, Philbin apologized to the team in a private meeting for how he’s handled the situation, but Salguero said the Tannehill is already beginning to sour on Philbin, similar to how Tannehill grew frustrated with offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in 2013.
Tannehill has had a disappointing season so far in 2014. He’s 70-for-124 in completion attempts (56.5 percent), and has four touchdowns compared to two interceptions, but the Miami coaching staff wants to see more improvement and production from Tannehill. The second-year signal caller has thrown for more than 200 yards in both of the past two weeks, however, and the Dolphins are 1-2 on the young season.
