Many have questioned what the Phoenix Suns are doing considering they now employ Goran Dragic, Isaiah Thomas, Zoran Dragic and Eric Bledsoe in their backcourt.

That’s a significant amount of talent who is making (or will be making) a significant amount of cash moving forward. But might the Phoenix Suns simply be in asset stocking mode in preparation of a trade? It’s something that seems to make sense and according to Basketball Insiders could be a possibility if the team struggles out of the gate.

"Word is, the Suns are currently in favor of utilizing a three-headed attack between Dragic, Bledsoe and Thomas but the existence of the roster redundancy at least makes a mid-season move a possibility. Teams could also find themselves reaching out to Phoenix regarding some of this young talent if the Suns don’t end up having quite the success they’d like to have."

Not only is a backcourt consisting of the Dragic’s, Thomas and Bledsoe expensive it’s also small. Given that, it may be that the Phoenix Suns are simply trying to stockpile whatever talent they can right now in hopes of packaging it elsewhere in a trade. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen a team do such and it could very well prove to be an effective strategy as the players they’ve signed will only become better values as the NBA’s salary cap continues to rise.
