Roger Goodell, DeMaurice Smith hold initial meeting about new NFL conduct policy

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell blathered on and on in his infamous press conference about the need for the NFL to “get its house in order.” If we are to indulge this metaphor, what does that make DeMaurice Smith and the NFLPA? The really angry roommate?

Goodell and Smith reportedly met this week to hold an initial meeting about a new conduct policy for the NFL. Specifically at issue was the creation of a new conduct committee.
Jason La Canfora of CBS writes the following about the meeting:
"Both men had busy schedules but managed to get together for what will be ongoing dialogue on the pressing matter.They had been talking regularly, via the phone, as the NFL has endured its recent crisis of off-field issues, and will work closely to meet the goal of having this new disciplinary committee in place by the Super Bowl."
Both men have busy schedules, you guys. It’s at least slightly surprising that Goodell didn’t dodge the meeting by citing his super busy schedule. You know…doing Steve Bisciotti’s laundry, his weekly “Face Time” chat with Robert Kraft, and his usual dinner party with the Rooneys.

And that’s the upshot. Everybody involved needs to avoid falling into the trap of thinking it will be enough to have a bunch of meetings and fall back on nonsensical talking points about getting houses in order and the like. There needs to be actual, substantive action.
