Titans-Colts inactives: Charlie Whitehurst to start at QB for Tennessee

Backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst will make his first NFL start since 2011 on Sunday when the Tennessee Titans face the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Titans’ starting quarterback Jake Locker is inactive for Sunday’s game because of a wrist injury. Rookie Zach Mettenberger will be active for the first time in his NFL career as Tennessee’s backup.
Whitehurst hasn’t thrown a pass in an NFL game since starting in Week 7 of the 2011 season for the Seattle Seahawks against the Cincinnati Bengals.
He spent the last two seasons with the San Diego Chargers as the backup to Philip Rivers, but only appeared in two games and never attempted a pass. He had six carries for minus-5 yards in late-game cameos in wins against the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants.
With his long hair and beard, Whitehurst has been dubbed by some as “Clipboard Jesus,” a moniker he is not fond of. But he has played in only 15 games in six NFL seasons, starting four. He has completed 54.2 percent of his passes for 805 yards, with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
