It’s no secret that the Chicago Bulls want to sign Jimmy Butler to a contract extension. However, the club has four weeks to complete such a deal.

They may take every ounce of that time as noted by Sam Smith who hints the Chicago Bulls may not sign Butler until the deadline is approaching.
"The news question that will follow Butler around throughout October will be whether he signs a long-term extension. If he doesn’t, he’ll become a restricted free agent and the Bulls could match any offer next summer. If there is a deal, it likely wouldn’t come until the last moments like with Taj Gibson two years ago."
Why exactly Smith expects the Bulls to delay signing Jimmy Butler isn’t known, though it’s certainly a bit risky on the part of Chicago.
If Jimmy Butler doesn’t sign an extension before the October 31st deadline he’ll become a restricted free agent at season end. While the Chicago Bulls will have every right to match any contract offer he’s to receive, it’s been previously stated that Butler will be among the most coveted in free agency. That’s obviously something the Chicago Bulls want to avoid so you have to think a deal will get completed, be it now or right before the deadline.
Smith also expects Jimmy Butler to guard the oppositions best offensive player, something that will only raise his price tag if he’s to become a restricted free agent.
