Kelly was scheduled to broadcast the Twins’s series against the Arizona Diamondbacks with Fox Sports North, but was diagnosed with the stroke on Thursday. Twins general manager Terry Ryan spoke with Kelly, who said that he’s fine and there are no long-term effects from the stroke.
“Anytime you talk about a stroke, it sounds real, real serious,” Ryan said. “He just had a scare.” Ryan had been receiving updates on Kelly’s health throughout the weekend.
Kelly is still a special assistant with the Twins organization, and Ryan said Kelly should be healthy enough to assist the team in a search for a new manager. The Twins fired longtime manager Ron Gardenhire today, a little more than a month after Ryan gave a vote of confidence to Gardenhire returning for the 2015 season. Gardenhire replaced Kelly as manager for the 2002 season after Kelly stepped down, and led the Twins to six American League Central division titles in his tenure as the Twins’ manager.
