In the wee hours of the morning Sunday, Georgia’s star running back Todd Gurley was falsely accused of assaulting a man in a downtown Athens bar, Athens-Clarke County police said according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

A 20-year-old Georgia student called police at his home at 3:18 a.m. after his trip to the Bourbon Street Bar & Grill, accusing Gurley of punching him and attacking him after he had taken a picture of himself with Gurley in the background.

Police then looked to surveillance tape, and clearly saw that it was a white-male that had punched the student and not Todd Gurley.

But, Gurley was there that night. He agreed to go to the downtown police station for an interview and said that a student had been trying to take pictures of himself (selfies) with Gurley in the background who was with friends from his hometown.

Gurley told police that he did see the student getting in arguments with other people at the bar. He said at one point the student actually lost his hat and when Gurley went to pick it up for him, the student make a racial remark directed at Gurley which led to another male punching the student, but Gurley said he did not see the student get punched.

When the student was notified that it had been a white male and not Gurley that punched him at the bar, he became confrontational according to police, but he stated that he was not drunk, though he had been drinking that night.

Here’s a part of the police statement from the Athens Banner-Herald:

"“In consideration of all the information, to include statements and video recordings from the incident location, Todd Gurley’s involvement in this report is unfounded,” the detective wrote in a supplemental report. “Based also on the information … I was able to see clearly that Todd Gurley had no involvement in this case other than trying to give an individual his hat back.”"

If Gurley had been involved, it certainly would have portrayed a negative light on the nations best running back. He has 610 yards and six touchdowns on the ground in four games for the 3-1 Bulldogs. Georgia fans are undoubtedly rejoicing that their star player will only be viewed as a good samaritan from this incident.
