Count center Mikhail Grigorenko among those with a shot to play more NHL minutes after Grigorenko potted two spectacular goals, one in the shootout, in Buffalo’s 3-2 shootout loss at Toronto.
The game’s scoring began on this play, a beautiful finish by Grigorenko on a saucer pass from Cody Hodgson.
Grigorenko displays some world-class hand-eye coordination in batting down the Hodgson pass, flexing his stick to keep up with the bobbling puck and still shooting it on net for the game’s first goal.
He could have sat at center ice with his thumb in his mouth for the rest of the game and still had a shot at the pro roster. Add in this shootout goal though and you have a guy who will make it tough for the coaching staff to send him back to the AHL in October.
Grigorenko puts on the classic ‘Peter Forsberg’ move here, showing his long range and fluid style in burying a shootout goal.
This is a huge training camp and preseason for Grigorenko, who acknowledged this past offseason that he was starting fresh after a disastrous two-year start to his NHL career. With new management and a new coaching staff, the slate is clean for Mikhail Grigorenko, who remains one of Buffalo’s most talented young forwards. If he can keep making plays like these, the Sabres will have no choice but to keep him on the pro roster in October when the regular season opens.
