Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is hoping to return for the team’s Week 5 game at the Denver Broncos, but issues with his shoulder aren’t going away. Palmer told ESPN’s Ed Werder that a nerve in his throwing shoulder is still holding him back with less than a week until the team’s next game.

Palmer has always been a deep ball specialist and if he can’t put his customary zip on the ball, then he won’t be the preferred option for the Cardinals. It’s also not as though the Cardinals can’t afford to wait a week or two in order to allow Palmer to get to full health. Backup Drew Stanton performed admirably in Week 3 against the San Francisco 49ers and gives the Cardinals a viable starter in the interim.

If Carson Palmer is healthy enough to throw a deep ball, he will likely be the starter as the Cardinals will need an offense that can keep up with the high-flying Denver Broncos. However, anything less than 100% health should be a red flag for the Cardinals, who would prefer to keep Palmer healthy for a potential playoff run later in the season.
