Chicago White Sox’s Chris Sale, Robin Ventura argued in clubhouse
By Ed Carroll
After he was called “weak” by an opposing manager, the Chicago White Sox’s Chris Sale and manager Robin Ventura had a heated argument which resulted in Sale leaving the White Sox clubhouse to head home before the start of last Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.

Sale and Ventura apparently argued after Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus called Sale “weak” for allegedly hitting Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez in Sale’s start on Wednesday. The Tigers believed Sale threw at Martinez because White Sox outfielder Avisail Garcia, who was acquired from the Tigers at the trade deadline in 2013, told Martinez that Chicago thought Martinez had someone stealing Sale’s signs.
After Ausmus called out Sale, but apparently shortly before Ventura publicly defended his ace, Ventura and Sale got into a shouting match in the clubhouse, and Sale, who had already pitched his final start the day before, left the clubhouse and went home. Ventura said afterwards that the argument got emotional, but he and Sale were on good terms. Ventura said he prefers to keep arguments like this in the clubhouse, and didn’t elaborate further.
Ventura received an extension from the White Sox earlier this year, and Sale is the team’s ace, so it’s likely this is just a non-issue of frustrated members of a losing team venting steam, and not something to be concerned about for 2015.
