Ausmus can’t set the roster yet, though, because the club is unsure of Rajai Davis’s status. Davis
a Grade 1 pubic strain on September 27, and it’s not surprising the team in’t ready to make a call on his availability yet.
The diagnosis is pretty broad, but the ALDS doesn’t start until Thursday, so there’s no rush for the Tigers to make a final decision yet.
Davis has been a key player for Detroit down the stretch as the team’s replacement for the traded Austin Jackson, but a lot of his value is in his legs (2.6 wSB, wins above average with his stolen bases, per Fangraphs), and if Davis’s running ability is limited, there might not be reason to roster him for the ALDS, though the Tigers can change their roster before the American League Championship Series, should they advance against the Los Angeles Angels.
Detroit already has an MVP-runner-up candidate at DH in Victor Martinez, and other hitters more qualified than Davis in a pinch-hitting situation. Still, if the team thinks he’s capable of limited action, it wouldn’t be a shock to see him included on the bench.
