New York Yankees trying to extend GM Brian Cashman
By Ed Carroll
The New York Yankees have started to prepare a contract extension for general manager Brian Cashman, Buster Olney reports. Cashman’s contract is due to expire soon, but it’s expected that Cashman will return to the Yankees for an 18th season and more.

Cashman’s job was believed to be safe, despite a small shakeup in the front office and the Major League club failing to make the playoffs in consecutive years. The Yankees missed the playoffs two years in a row for the first time since the 1992 and 1993 seasons, but Olney reports that the Steinbrenner family is generally satisfied with Cashman’s body of work as the team’s GM, and he has a good relationship with them as well.
Manager Joe Girardi will return, barring anything unforeseen, as he still has three seasons remaining on a four-year contract agreed to last year.
The Yankees season was slightly masked by the Derek Jeter going away party, which, while deserved, likely did wear on the team as the season went. New York won 84 games despite getting little contribution from free agent pickup Carlos Beltran and incumbent first baseman Mark Teixeira. It’s not clear if the Yankees plan to make any big moves this offseason, but Giardi said earlier that he expects Alex Rodriguez to be the team’s third baseman, but is not sure if it will happen.
