NFL: 5 worst games of the ‘Thursday Night Football’ era
By Bryce Olin
3. Dec. 21, 2006: Green Bay Packers 9 Minnesota Vikings 7
The first line of ESPN’s recap reads:
"It might have been Brett Favre’s final fling at Lambeau Field, and it wasn’t pretty."
Oh, the irony.
This TNF game is one of the worst of all-time. I mean, look at the score, 9-7.
On a short week and between two teams who knew each other so well at the time, this game was basically a stalemate with the Packers doing just enough to kick a game-winning field goal.
If you know someone that watched this game that lasted, buy them another beer. They could definitely use it, even if this game was eight years ago.
The Packers dominated the game from a yardage standpoint, out-gaining the Vikings 319 total yards to 104 total yards, but the Vikings forced three turnovers, including two Favre interceptions.
Vikings’ cornerback Fred Smoot took one of those interceptions back for a touchdown, and gave the Vikings a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Favre led the Packers down the field and set up a 44-yard field goal by Dave Rayner with 1:34 remaining.
If only that game was actually Favre’s last game at Lambeau…
Favre did return to the Packers for one more season and led the Packers to a 13-3 record before heading to the New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings for three more seasons, a d**k-pic scandal, and couple more concussions.
