Van Gundy made a few moves – the Pistons signed guard Jodie Meeks, point guard D.J. Augustin, center Aaron Gray, swingman Caron Butler and guard Cartier Martin. Then, restricted free agent big man Greg Monroe signed his qualifying offer so he will be around for at least one more season.
According to Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors, the Pistons could be a surprise team.
"I think they’re missing a big-time scorer who can close out games. Brandon Jennings, 55-point game aside, is not that guy. They have some very good players, but no real star. You can win like that (and the Pistons did in 2004), but you’ve got to get lucky, and you’ve got to have more experience and cohesion than they have now. I think they can be a playoff team, but without someone to go to in the fourth quarter, I don’t see them putting a scare into anybody in the first round."
Van Gundy has proven to be an excellent coach in the past and he has talent to work with so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Pistons contend for a playoff spot.
