According to Shalise Manza Young of The Boston Globe, Dobson was inactive because he “mouthed off” to Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.
The Patriots might be looking for a trade to bolster their offense, which has looked completely inept lately, most recently in a 41-14 blowout loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. If Dobson has immaturity issues, that won’t be tolerated in the Patriots’ locker room, and he could be on his way out quickly, despite the Patriots using a 2nd round draft pick on him in 2013.
There are still lingering rumors that Larry Fitzgerald is on the Patriots’ radar, and his presence could make someone like Dobson expendable immediately.
Dobson is a talented receiver, and might be the best deep threat the Patriots have on their roster right now. That’s a significant area of weakness in New England, so there’s a chance that Dobson and McDaniels can mend fences and find a role for him this year. It would certainly be best for all parties if they could find a productive role for him and give QB Tom Brady another option.
Still, Bill Belichick isn’t known for his patience with loud-mouthed WRs who don’t produce, and fans in New England are certainly clamoring for some personnel changes. Unless things change soon for Dobson’s time with Patriots could soon be over.
