The Los Angeles Lakers could have plenty of cap space in 2015

The Los Angeles Lakers finished 25-57 last season and it appears like they will be in for another long season. Although Kobe Bryant and Steve Nash are returning from injury, the Lakers lost Pau Gasol to the Chicago Bulls and the roster needs a serious upgrade in talent.

However, one more rough season might lead to a quick improvement.

According to Larry Coon of Basketball Insiders, the Lakers could have up to $26.2 million in cap room and will likely pursue max free agents in 2015.

"I think they’ll do both. Next summer, assuming they don’t pick up the team option on Jordan Hill, they could have about $26.2 million in cap space, which is enough to go after a max-level player. Technically LeBron James can become a free agent again, as can Kevin Love (although at this point the default assumption has to be that both will stay in Cleveland). There’s also LeMarcus Aldridge, Rajon Rondo, and a handful of guys on rookie contracts who may not be extended."

Memphis Grizzlies’ center Marc Gasol and Detroit Pistons’ big man Greg Monroe will also be free agents and it wouldn’t be a surprie to see the Lakers pursue either player. Reports earlier in the offseason indicated the Lakers had interest in Monroe this summer.
