The Hockey News has apparently decided that reality television does it right, and is releasing their Top 50 Hockey Players list in ten-player increments. Have the bottom ten players already hinted at a list that not many will agree with, though?

Zdeno Chara comes in at number 42, signifying the first major red light in the whole list. While Chara is clearly aging and no longer at his prime, the six-foot-nine blue liner is still miles above the majority of the players in the league. I would have at least put him in the thirties, if not the late twenties.

There’s also a bit of discrepancy in the bottom four players. Patrick Sharp comes in dead last on the list, with Nathan MacKinnon directly above him. Not entirely sure I agree with these two rounding out the list- MacKinnon put up an impressive 63 points in his breakout rookie season, which already puts him above Phil Kessel’s rookie season by- ah, math is hard, but over thirty points.

Maybe the list is based off of current performance. Which would be fine- but, you know, Jaromir Jagr only put up 67 points last year, and was ranked above both MacKinnon and Sharp. Oh, and Sharp posted 78 points last season- yet, he’s in dead last.

It should be interesting, nonetheless, to see how the list continues to roll out. Chara has fallen from his fifteenth overall spot last season, so someone has undoubtedly skyrocketed. Logan Couture has also fallen from grace, dropping from 28th overall last year to 46th in this list. Seven of the bottom ten weren’t even ranked last year, as well, meaning that there will be some names absent from this list.

We’ll just have to wait and see how things… well, roll out.
