  • Each deal, which will expire at the end of the 2014-2015 season, is worth a $1.4 million cap hit. The two contracts are an absolute steal- both players were anticipated at pulling in much higher contracts. Reilly Smith, who was an acquisition from the Dallas Stars during the Tyler Seguin trade two summers ago, scored twenty goals last season- and Torey Krug became the only undrafted player named to the league-wide All-Rookie team back in June.

The deals may seem absurdly cheap, but they speak volumes as to how dedicated the two players are to remaining in Boston. The team is currently sitting at $800k over the salary cap (although, based on some pretty sloppy math calculations, this puts them- ah, $3.6 million over the cap), with just two weeks before the season begins.

Once the season has started, long-term injured reserve center Marc Savard’s $4 million dollar cap hit will be erased from the team’s salary cap space, but this doesn’t do much to help matters before the season begins. It’s likely that a trade is coming, and fast- Boston fans might be saying farewell to a familiar name within the next twenty-four hours, if these contracts have finally been reached.
