ALDS: Royals’ Kelvin Herrera has tightness in right forearm
By Hayden Kane
The Kansas City Royals are flying high after an extra innings victory over the Los Angeles Angels in Game 1 of their American League Division Series. That celebration might have been somewhat subdued, however, due to potentially bad news when it comes to Kansas City’s devastating bullpen.

Setup man Kelvin Herrera, one part of the three-headed monster in the bullpen that also includes Wade Davis and Greg Holland, was forced to exit his appearance on Thursday night after facing just one hitter. It was clear Herrera was uncomfortable after one pitch in particular.
After the game the team announced that Herrera was experiencing tightness in his right forearm. They will reassess his status on Friday. Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star writes that Herrera will undergo an MRI on Friday.
The Royals have reached this point by being one of the best teams in baseball in terms of run prevention. Part of that advantage comes thanks to the superior defense they play, something that was on display in their win on Thursday.
The other part of that advantage comes thanks to their devastating bullpen. If Kansas City is in a tight game or holds a lead in the late innings, odds are good that they can shut down an opposing offense, even one as potent as the Angels. That aspect of their team could take a hit if they are without Herrera, however, who presumably will not be available for Game 2 Friday night regardless.
During the regular season, Herrera posted a 1.41 ERA in 70 appearances.
