The Titans could turn to Bishop Sankey to carry the load

The Tennessee Titans released running back Chris Johnson in the offseason and moved on to rookie running back Bishop Sankey. They have been bringing Bishop Sankey along slowly so far this season, but he saw a good amount of playing time last week against the Indianapolis Colts. Bishop Sankey appears to be ready to take over more playing time this week for the Titans and there are some asking what type of future he has in the NFL.

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt talked about Bishop Sankey seeing some more playing time in the coming weeks.

From CBS Sports:

“You will see [more reps for Sankey]. That’s coming. And I think you’ll see more of that earlier in the game this week. I think one of the things that does get lost is that he had more snaps in the game last week than any of our running backs. That game got a little one-sided quickly, so maybe it wasn’t as evident, but he was in there earlier.”

Bishop Sankey did get playing time early on in the game against the Colts and came on strong when Tennessee used him as a receiver out of the backfield and gave him a few more carries. The Colts’ defense isn’t exactly one of the best in the NFL, but they aren’t one of the worst either. Tennessee believes that they have found their future at running back and he has a chance to begin showing that potential this week against the Cleveland Browns.

So far this season, Bishop Sankey has carried the football 24 times for 123 yards and a touchdowns. At just 22 years of age, he has plenty of time to reach his full potential and has a lot more to learn about the game from his coaches as well. The Titans giving him playing time will help develop him and he should begin showing improvement over the next few weeks assuming the use him in a consistent role.

Tennessee is in need of some weapons on the offensive side of the football, especially with Jake Locker being unable to stay healthy and play consistent football. Don’t expect to see Bishop Sankey getting 25 or more carries per game at any point this year, but he does have the potential to become a workhorse in the future. Expect to see a lot more playing time for Bishop Sankey this week.
