Jose Fernandez is having a pretty good rehab

One of the biggest disappointments of the MLB season was losing Miami Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez to Tommy John surgery in May. But the 2013 NL Rookie of the Year has been excited by his past two throwing sessions, and his rehabilitation continues to go well.

Fernandez threw 25 total throws on Friday — he is not throwing off a mound yet — and will remain on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule for throwing. The Marlins don’t expect the 22-year-old righty to be back until about midway through the 2015 season; and are being careful not to rush their prized young pitcher back to the mound too soon, despite Fernandez’s enthusiasm:

“I have never felt this good ever,” Fernandez told the Miami Hearld. “The ball is coming out of my hand effortlessly.”

These are all encouraging signs to hear from a pitcher who wasn’t just one of the National League’s best rookies in 2013, but one of the NL’s best pitchers, period. He was named to the 2013 all-star team and finished third in the NL Cy Young Award voting. Fernandez had a 2.19 ERA in 176.2 innings pitched in 2013 with 187 strikeouts, and had a 2.44 ERA in eight starts (51.2 innings pitched) with 70 Ks before he was hurt this season. He’s under Miami team control until at least 2019.
