Alex Smith couldn’t pull off the redemption game against his old team, the San Francisco 49ers.
In his first regular-season matchup against the San Francico 49ers since being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs, Alex Smith had his chance at redemption against his former team, but it slipped through his hands and into another’s.
The 49ers scored the last nine points to improve to 3-2 with a 22-17 win against the Chiefs, who fall to 2-3, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Frank Gore stood out with a 107-yard performance.

On the first drive of the game, Alex Smith led the Chiefs on a 12-play, 81-yard drive capped off by a two-yard touchdown throw to tight end Travis Kelce, who did the Ric Flair after.

On the next drive, the 49ers answered that with a 31-yard field goal after Colin Kaepernick failed to convert on a 3rd-and-five with an incomplete pass to Stevie Johnson. After trading a pair of field goals to start off the second quarter, the Chiefs led 10-6.
San Francisco took the lead with a 93-yard drive that started with more than seven minutes left in the game. Kaepernick found Johnson on a flag route to the sideline for a nine-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds left. It was a 13-play, 93 yard drive that gave the 49ers a 13-10 lead going into halftime.
It seemed the 49ers offense was firing after that drive, but they opened up the third quarter going three-and-out. Kansas City retook the lead when DeAnthony Thomas scored on a swing pass from Smith that he took 17 yards for a touchdown.
San Francisco answered with a 52-yard field goal by Phil Dawson to bring the game to 17-16 with 6:21 left in the third.
Neither team got much going on offense after that, until the fourth quarter when the 49ers faked a punt on their own 30-yard line to pick up the first down. On the following third down, Kaepernick found Brandon Lloyd, who made an acrobatic catch for a 29-yard completion.

The 49ers capped off the drive with a field goal to retake the lead, 19-17. San Francisco got another stop and another field goal on the next possession, a 30-yard field goal that capped off a 14-play drive that took 4:58 off the clock and gave the 49ers a 22-17 lead.
Smith was in a perfect situation for redemption over the team that traded him away, getting the ball back with 2:12 left with a chance to lead his team to a game-winning drive. Except San Francisco would have none of it. Smith overthrew his target Anthony Fasano and was intercepted by Parish Cox to end the game.
