Bad news for the Denver Broncos. It doesn’t look like running back Montee Ball will be playing anytime soon after injuring groin in Sunday’s win over the Arizona Cardinals.

From the Denver Post:

"Broncos starting running back Montee Ball will undergo a magnetic imaging exam on his strained groin Monday morning. The initial belief is Ball will be “out for a while,” according to an NFL source."

While Ball has struggled to get going this season, the loss of the second-year running back will hurt a Broncos team that is currently the worst rushing team in the NFL. Prior to Sunday’s game, Ball rushed for 165 yards and a touchdown.

Last season, the Broncos were better built for a running back injury as they employed Knowshon Moreno, but with Moreno currently a Miami Dolphin (and injured), they’ll have to rely a stable of backs to get the job done.

To be specific, those backs may be Ronnie Hillman and Justin Thompson who combined for 79 yards and a touchdown on Sunday. With Peyton Manning at quarterback and him possibly having the best receiving core of his career, it may not matter who the running backs are, but if the defense doesn’t respect Hillman, Thompson, or whoever is in, it’ll be harder for Manning to operate through the air.
