The San Diego Chargers improved to 4-1 on the season after absolutely dominating the New York Jets, 31-0, on Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium.

San Diego put its first points on the board with 7:31 left in the first quarter thanks to an 8-yard touchdown pass from Philip Rivers to Antonio Gates.

Rivers and Gates would connect on another score (12 yards) in the second quarter that made it 14-0. With 42 seconds before the break, San Diego posted its third score, a 15-yard rush from Branden Oliver.

Oliver also added the third quarter’s only touchdown, scoring on a 9-yard reception from Rivers. A 34-yard Nick Novak field goal in the fourth quarter rounded out the scoring.

It was a disastrous day for New York, who benched starting quarterback Geno Smith in favor of Michael Vick once the game got out of hand. Smith was just 4-12 for 27 yards and threw an interception before getting pulled. Vick wasn’t any better, going 8-19 for just 47 yards.

Chris Ivory was New York’s top rusher on the day, adding 44 yards on the ground. Jeremy Kerly, with just 24 receiving yards, was the team’s best receiver.

Rivers continued his great start to the season, ending the day 20-28 for 288 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Oliver, filling in for an injured Donald Brown as the team’s bellcow back, posted 114 yards rushing. Malcom Floyd led the way in the receiving game, catching three balls for 72 yards.

Next Sunday, the Jets take on the Denver Broncos at home and the Chargers face off against the Oakland Raiders on the road.
