Peter Budaj has been traded to the Winnipeg Jets

Montreal Canadiens fans have to be feeling pretty glum, but Winnipeg Jets fans are all thinking the same thing:

Finally!”

Although the hockey community expected the Winnipeg Jets to make some significant moves over the summer, the team was ominously silent. Seems they’ve decided to be one of those last-minute teams, though, as they’ve announced a trade this morning.

According to Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman, the Winnipeg Jets are sending 25-year-old left winger Eric Tangradi to Montreal. In exchange, the Canadiens are sending a prospect (Patrick Holland, who has spent the past two seasons with the Hamilton Bulldogs), and… Peter Budaj.

  • That’s right, the Atlantic Division team has decided that backup goaltender Peter Budaj’s locker room presence and veteran experience will be better suited in Winnipeg.

The 32-year-old Slovakian goaltender has spent the past three seasons with the Canadiens, and has already established a strong off-ice leadership role with the team. It was assumed (at least, by me) that he was kept on the team, despite the inevitability of young goaltending prospect Dustin Tokarski seeing more play, because of the way he glued the team together.

In addition to Tokarski needing more play in Montreal, I could see Budaj providing that “glue”-like characteristic for the Winnipeg Jets, something that critics have observed the team was lacking last season. The Jets have been overrun with rumors- some people think Evander Kane wants out, others think Blake Wheeler wants out, yet others still think the whole team has a lack of respect for one another- and adding a player like Budaj could help Winnipeg turn things around.
