Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday broke the NCAA record for passing yards in game but the Cougars fell to the California Golden Bears in the final seconds.
Former Houston Cougars’ quarterback David Klingler threw for 716 yards in a 62-45 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils on December 2, 1990.

That was an FBS record that stood until Saturday night when Washington State Cougars’ quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 734 yards in a 60-59 loss to the California Golden Bears. Connor Halliday not only now has the FBS record – he has the NCAA record, surpassing former Old Dominion Monarchs’ quarterback Taylor Heinicke, who threw for 730 yards in a 64-61 victory over New Hampshire in 2012.
Connor Halliday broke the record on the Cougars’ final drive. Trailing by one, he drove the Cougars from their own 30-yard line to the California two-yard line. Unfortunately, Quentin Breshears missed a 19-yard field goal attempt that would have won the game wide right, giving the Bears the victory.
However, the end was not without controversy. Two plays before the missed kick, Cougars’ running back Gerard Wicks appeared to have scored but the play was never reviewed.
It's SD, but this is as close to a TD as you can get if it isn't one pic.twitter.com/xQjkvuevyd

Of course, you have to credit to the Bears, specifically Trevor Davis. Davis had three catches for 82 yards and two touchdowns and returned consecutive kick-offs for touchdowns in the third quarter.
Connor Halliday finished the day by completing 49-of-70 passes with six touchdowns and zero interceptions.
The Cougars fall to 2-4 while the Bears improve to a surprising 4-1.
