It’s not like Dirk Nowitzki needed to add another weapon to his already impressive offensive game, but the Dallas Mavericks’ franchise forward has decided to do so anyway.

For nearly two years, Dirk has been working on adding the skyhook to his arsenal and at times would bust it out during games last season, though wasn’t exactly confident in the shot. Now he appears a bit more willing to unleash the shot made famous by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

“The sky hook is a tough shot,” Nowitzki said following Friday’s practice at American Airlines Center. “Especially if you don’t have any moves, if you don’t come out of the rhythm and just turn around and shoot it.

“That’s why nobody else is shooting it like Kareem. I don’t know how he did it, but that shot is unbelievable.”

While Dirk Nowitzki wasn’t overly impressed with his skyhook last year he might have been the only one. No, he didn’t hit with the same consistency in comparison to his silky smooth jumper but that’s not to be expected with such a tough shot.

Given what we’ve seen Dirk Nowitzki do on a basketball court it’s hard to think that after working on the skyhook for two seasons that he won’t make it an effective part of his game. That has to be a terrifying thought for opposing defenses who not only have to fear Dirk on the elbow and perimeter but now have to be concerned with the forward dropping  a skyhook in the lane.

Combined with Dirk’s now alleged shot release, if the Dallas Mavericks’ star can knock down the hook with consistency, you have to think it’s possible his career could be extended because of the new shot as well.
