Novak Djokovic extended his incredible winning streak at the Beijing Open to 24 games undefeated as he lifted the trophy on Sunday. The Serb has only ever dropped 2 sets in his entire career at the tournament, which saw him beat Grigor Dimitrov and Andy Murray on route to a final clash with Thomas Berdych.
Berdych, chasing points in the Race for the World Tour Finals, was slated to threaten Djokovic and his unbeaten streak. Nevertheless, the Czech struggled to make any impression on the Serbian’s game, at one point having to fend off a match point that would have seen him go down without winning a single game:
Djokovic told the BBC of his 6-0 6-2 annihilation that:
"“It was probably my best performance in all the finals in my career. It was incredible, incredible,” the Serb said.“It was 6-0 5-0 in under an hour. Everything I tried worked. To be proud of the performance is the least I can say of how I played.” – Djokovic"
It was truly a perfect performance from Djokovic, who heads into this week’s Masters event in Shanghai in ominous form. Berdych was so overcome by his opponent’s quality that he jokingly offered his racquet to one of the ball girls:
Berdych will look to take the positives out of a week that saw him reach the final, only to come up against a man on a mission. He also enters the Shanghai Masters in good form, looking to secure his place in the Top 8 of the Race and therefore appear at the season ending World Tour Finals at the O2 in London.
