Real Madrid and Wales superstar Gareth Bale has broken another record, this time claiming his fourth Welsh Player of the Year award, despite only being 25 years old. He moved to Real Madrid after making his name at English club Tottenham for a world record transfer fee of £85 million and despite his early critics, he has settled into life in Spain.
Bale scored crucial goals in both the Copa Del Rey and Champions League Final, helping Madrid to the infamous ‘la Decima’, their tenth Champions League success that they were so desperate for. His pace and eye for goal has transferred well into the Spanish game and his performances for the Welsh national team have also been at the top level.
Bale scored an impressive 22 goals in 44 appearances during his first season at Real Madrid and has 14 for the Welsh national team. In La Liga he has started this new season his glowing form, scoring 4 goals in 7 games, looking to improve on last season’s total.
Tottenham’s former Swansea full-back Ben Davies won the young player of the year award and Swansea centre-back on captain Ashley Williams was named club player of the year for the fourth year in a row.
For Bale it was a year where the award was more hotly contested than his previous win, after fellow Welshman Aaron Ramsey had an outstanding year for Arsenal in the Premier League. The midfielder suffered from injuries in the middle of the season which perhaps dented his ambition to beat Bale to the player of the year award.
Wales must unite as a team for two home Euro 2016 qualifiers, against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus on 10 and 13 October. They will be heavily reliant on Bale producing his usual quality and it would be hard to imagine the defenders on either opponent teams are looking forward to this prospect of dealing with Bale in full flow.
